Notes
Rewald (1996, p. 251) noted: "No precise date of execution can be established for this canvas; it may have been painted in either Paris or Aix. Its unusual monochromaticism does not link it to any other picture, but the small brushstrokes in the beard and other areas to which Cézanne devoted special attention seem to relate it to such landscapes as La Maison abandonnée, 1878–79 (113), Cour de ferme, c.1879 (129), Au fond du ravin, l'Estaque, 1878–79 (123), La Baie de l'Estaque vue de l'est, c.1876–79 (97), and particularly to the views of L'Estaque of circa 1879."
