Kondō 1921
Kondō, Kōichirō. "Sezannu tenkan (Cézanne Exhibits)." Chuō Bijutsu [Central Art Review] 7, no. 4 (April 1921), p. 63. Text in Japanese.
"The worshippers of Cézanne through reproductions saw the actual self-portrait and seemed to be overcome with wonder, rapture, as if they were dreaming. Some went up to the picture, rubbing their eyes as if they were dazzled, apparently awed by the marvel they were observing. Others sat in chairs ten feet away in a strangely thoughtful attitude as if praying incoherently."
The text is accompanied by a cartoon image of the overwhelmed visitors, illustrated in Schoneveld, 2019, p. 198, fig. 160.
