Cezanne’s impact on artists and writers on art is considerable. His views on painting are often cited and his pictures analyzed and illustrated in numerous books and journals. Well over 35,000 references have already been added to the database representing nearly 3000 publications – more are being added every day.
A search for an individual publication will return, along with a full citation, a display in color of all of the paintings reproduced or cited, as thumbnails, in relative size or in list form.
With advances in electronic technology, more and more newspapers, journals, even books are available through digitized online archives. For example, links to Julius Meier-Graefe’s 1904 critical study of Modern Art, as well as his 1910 monograph on the artist, make it convenient to read these texts in their original form. John Rewald’s 1937 review of Lionello’s Venturi’s 1936 catalogue raisonné of Cezanne’s art is also accessible by simply clicking on a link to a digital archive. Exhibition reviews are often linked to the catalogue itself as well, such as Thadée Natanson’s 1895 assessment of Cézanne’s first retrospective in La Revue Blanche.
