Notes

In an August 1861 letter  to Baptistin Baille, Zola writes that Cézanne painted his portrait; the artist later destroyed it, however. According to Rewald, this "portrait may have been executed during Zola's stay in Aix, in the summer of 1862 or even somewhat later."
