According to Michele Santulli, the subject is Maria Giuseppa De Rosa and wears a traditional ciociaro costume.  She was the sister of Michele De Rosa, the sitter for Cezanne's Garçon au gilet rouge series. She lived in Paris at 11 rue Laplace.
