Notes

Venturi thought this might be the Chappe telegraph tower on the summit of Montmartre, which Pissarro painted in 1863 (cf. Pissarro-Snollaerts, vol. II, p. 76, no. 67). The telegraph was destroyed by fire in 1844; the tower survived until 1866.  One can find old postcard views of the tower and panoramas of the butte, but the identification of the painting with Montmartre is not convincing. If the tower is indeed represented here, then the painting would require a date no later than 1866.

Blanc (2019, p. 123) does not believe that the painting was neither executed in L'Estaque nor Montmartre.

Paysage, c.1867 (FWN 46). Postcard view of the telegraph tower on Montmartre before it was destroyed by fire.
