Notes
This landscape has historically been associated with the Midi, but the colors and features of the terrain make it more likely to have been painted in the North, perhaps around Paris. As to the date of the work, Rewald (1996, p. 332) writes: "Although it looks very much like an early painting of about 1876, when Cézanne emerged from his apprenticeship in Auvers and still showed hesitancy in some of his pictures, both Ratcliffe and Gowing insisted that it should be assigned to the early 1880s. Since that was also a period of transition... we accept their views."
