Notes

The subject of this painting has often been assigned to the Pilon du Roi, although more recent scholarship has rejected that designation. Machotka has suggested it might be in the South, perhaps at Les Revenants, near Bouc-Bel-Air. Rewald and Coutagne think it is probably in the North, perhaps in the area of Melun, where Cézanne lived from April 1879-March 1880.
