Notes

Hortense Fiquet is wearing the same striped dress, with slight variation, in Madame Cezanne en robe rayée, 1883–85 (466) and possibly again in Madame Cezanne aux cheveux dénoués, 1885–86 (500).

This small painting was probably shown in the Third Impressionist Exhibition of 1877, no. 28.  Although previously unidentified, the work was described in a review of the exhibition: "A rapprocher d'un portrrait féminin... le buste de la femme coupée en morceaux, – sans doute un objet d'art commandé par M. le greffier de la Morgue pour la décoration de son cabinet." (Bernardille)
