Rewald (1996, p. 254) observed that the comma shapes in the background were the same as in Jeune fille au piano—Ouverture du Tannhäuser, 1869–70 (600).

Cézanne's son kept this portrait (as well as Portrait de l'artiste à la palette, 1886–87 (499)) in his Paris apartment for many years after his father died.
