Notes

The site of this work and even the subject have been disputed. Rewald (1996) questioned whether this was a beach at all (in spite of the title he assigned to it) and thought it might have been painted in the North. As far as the execution is concerned, he connected it with La Maison de Bellevue sur la colline, 1878–79 (114)

It is possible that it represents a landscape, even a quarry, near Gennevilliers. According to the 1931 Durand-Ruel inventory, no. 260, Monet owned a work Environs de Paris, Gennevilliers 65 x 54, which may be this work with the size reversed.
