Notes

Rewald (1996, p. 237) described the colors in the composition: "The vivid green of the fruit is set against a background of such a dark green as to appear black at first glance; the shadow of the white plate at right is of the same dark color. This contrast provides the small painting with great power. The three pears are not of the same green; the one in the middle shows traces of red, and the one at the left turns more to yellow. The foreground brightens up toward the left, where it becomes nearly as brown yellow as the surface of the table beyond the shadow at right."
