According to Rewald (1996), this work was probably copied from an engraving after a Dutch painting.
Venturi (1936) described the colors in the painting as: "Les fonds sont gris-bruns: les vêtements de la femme assise par terre sont d'un rouge-brun, ceux des autres femmes d'un blanc nuancé de gris-bleu."
