The Millet was acquired in 1875 by the Louvre. Shoemaker and Reff suggest that the "actual model was ...H.E. Lessore's drypoint reproduction in J.F. Millet, Les Travaux des champs (Paris, 1879)" (p. 165)

The front and back covers are of linen-covered board. Notation on back endpaper "LII x 2", indicating 52 recto and verso sheets. The pages are numbered in Roman numerals at the lower right corner of the recto ("a") in a soft blue-gray pencil. The sketchbook is unbound.
