The sculpture was originally attributed to Donatello and the subject as St. John the Baptist.  it has been reattributed to Desiderio da Settignano, unknown sitter.

D'après Settignano: Buste de jeune garçon, c.1895–98 (FWN 3013-12b). Desiderio da Settignano, Head of a young boy, marble, Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence. Cezanne copied a plaster cast of the work in the Musée de Sculpture comparée, Palais de Chaillot, Trocadero.
