Notes
If indeed the portrait of the man smoking is Emile Zola, then the drawing must be dated no later than 1885, the last known meeting between the artist and the writer.
This work is part of a sketchbook:
Sketchbook Chappuis II (CP II), 1871–98 (3008)
Sketchbook Chappuis II (CP II), 1871–98 (3008)
The sketchbook originally contained 50 sheets; the pages are numbered on the "a" side at lower right in Roman numerals.
At the time of Chappuis' purchase from Paul Guillaume, the sketchbook was incomplete and a number of pages already dispersed and are still missing.
Record last updated September 29, 2020. Please note that the information on this and all pages is periodically reviewed and subject to change.
