Venturi (1936) described the colors in the painting as: "ciel et paysage bleu-gris. Maison gris-brun; branche et feuilles de l'arbre vert-brun. Vêtements des personnages rouge-brique, sauf le manteau de la Vierge qui est noir. Tête de Belzébuth; cheveux noirs et flammes rouge. L'homme monté sur un âne est en gris."
