Notes
Flaubert's Tentation de saint Antoine appeared in L'Artiste in excerpted form from 1857; a complete edition first appeared in 1874. Cézanne painted the same theme of the saint in an earlier work from 1870 (La Tentation de saint Antoine, c.1870 (611)) and circa 1877 (La Tentation de saint Antoine, c.1877 (650)).
