Notes
Sara Lichtenstein was the first to suggest that this drawing is based on Delacroix's studies for a pendentive in the library of the Palais Bourbon (Assemblée Nationale, Paris). However it is unclear which of the three existing preparatory studies Cezanne could have known from reproductions.
Cezanne used these studies for the couples at the back and right center in Battle of Love, FWN656, FWN657 and FWN1870.
