Notes
The head of a mule is based on a drawing by Pisanello, the profile of a boy on a drawing by Boltraffio. Both drawings were formerly attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. Cezanne copied them after reproductions of wood engravings published in Le Magasin pittoresque. The models of the sketches were first identified by Robert Ratcliffe.
