Cezanne probably knew of the painting of Phryne (see letter to Huot from June 4, 1861) and he may have drawn this work from a reproduction published in an album by Musée Goupil & Co. Chappuis (1973, pp. 127–28) suggested that Cezanne may have drawn the work from memory because of its lack of precision. Ratcliffe idenfiied the originals; the reclining bather in Gérôme's Greek Interior and the standing figure of Phryne were used in several of Cezanne's compositions.
