Chappuis (1973, p. 116) saw a similarity to a male figure in the background of Eugène Delacroix's painting Attila and the Barbarians treading Italy and the Arts underfoot in the library of the Palais Bourbon.

The front and back covers are of linen-covered board. Notation on back endpaper "LII x 2", indicating 52 recto and verso sheets. The pages are numbered in Roman numerals at the lower right corner of the recto ("a") in a soft blue-gray pencil. The sketchbook is unbound.
