Andersen and Chappuis refer to a letter from Marion to Morstatt of May 24, 1868 that alludes to a project of Cezanne's: "Cezanne projette un tableau auquel il fera servir les portraits. L'un de nous, au milieu d'un paysage, parlera tandis que les autres écouteront."
