Notes

The figures at the top of the sheet are based on Delcacroix's painting The Abduction of Rebecca. Chappuis writes: "Cezanne probably drew these from a photograph, or one of the reproductions cited by Robaut 974 and Le Memorial 355, making a study of the head and arm of the horseman carrying off Rebecca." The subject is taken from Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe, published in 1819.
