Vous me demandez dans votre dernière lettre pourqoui je ne retourne pas encore à Aix. Je vous ai dit à ce sujet qu'il m'est, plus que vous ne pourvez le croire, agréable d'être auprès de vous, mais qu'une fois à Aix, je n'y suis plus libre, [et] que lorsque je désire retourner à Paris, c'est toujours pour moi une lutte à soutenir; et quoique votre opposition à mon retour ne soit pas absolue, je suis très affecté de la résistance que j'éprouve de votre part. Je désirerais vivement que ma liberté d'action ne soit point entravée et je n'en aurai que plus de joie à hâter mon retour.
Je demande à papa de me donner deux cents francs par mois, ça me permettra de faire un plein séjour à Aix, et j'aurai bien du plaisir à travailler dans le Midi dont les aspects offrent tant de ressources pour ma peinture. Croyez bien que je prie papa de vouloir bien m'accorder cette demande et je pourrai, je pense, faire dans le Midi les études que je désire poursuivre.
