Notes

The subject is taken from Apuleius in his The Metamorphoses, Book VI, Chapter XVI. The drawing by Raphael shows Psyche holding a transparent vase, not the pyxis containing the invisible gift from Prosperina. Instead Psyche is bringing back the crystalline urnul containing water from the river Styx.

D'après Raphael: Vénus, 1866–69 (FWN 3017-03a). Raphael, Psyché présentant à Vénus l'eau du Styx or Psyché présentant à Vénus le cadeau de Proserpine (Venus receiving rom Psyche the flask containing water from the Styx), sanguine, Musée du Louvre, Paris.
