Notes
This painting alludes to Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe. There is another version of this work, probably destroyed by the artist, depicting a group of people out of doors at Bennecourt. That canvas included a still life of "a basket with blue linen and some green and black bottles." (see remarks for Groupe de personnages, c.1866, summer (586-TA))
See Jeune fille au piano—Ouverture du Tannhäuser, 1869–70 (600) for the same dress worn by the girl at the piano and the standing woman to left of center. It was a style of 1868–69 (Van Buren, 1966).
