This painting alludes to Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe. There is another version of this work, probably destroyed by the artist, depicting a group of people out of doors at Bennecourt. That canvas included a still life of "a basket with blue linen and some green and black bottles." (see remarks for)
Seefor the same dress worn by the girl at the piano and the standing woman to left of center. It was a style of 1868–69 (Van Buren, 1966).
