Chappuis suggested that the head in a sulptured helmet "resembles the Hercules in a lion-muzzle headress from the Temple of Aegina, discovered in 1811 (Staatliche Antikensammlungen, Munich)" The head is illustrated p. 61, fig. 4 of Chappuis (1973). It is not known if Cezanne had any knowledge of the work.
The man smoking a pipe is similar to one of the figures in the Jerusalem sketchbook (FWN3016-x2b).
