Notes

The chair is the same one used in the large portrait of Cézanne's father (Louis-Auguste Cezanne, père de l'artiste, lisant L'Événement, 1866 autumn (402)), indicating that it was painted at the Jas de Bouffan  The painting was submitted to the Salon of 1870 and rejected; it appeared in a caricature by Stock.  Eugène Boch bought the portrait in 1891 from père Tanguy for 800 francs on the advice of Emile Bernard.
