Notes

According to Rivière (1923, p. 198) and subsequent scholars, the work was executed in Emile Zola's home on the rue La Condamine. It seems, however, that the writer did not take up residence there until 1869. He did, however live on the rue Moncey in 1867, where the work could have been painted. Alternatively, L'Enlèvement may have been executed in Cézanne's rue Beautreillis studio, where he also painted Le Poêle de l'atelier (FWN 703) two years earlier.
