Rewald (1983, p. 155) noted: "When Bruno Cassirer fled Hitler's Germany, he took this watercolor along, after a friend had made an excellent copy which was left behind in his Berlin apartment. The copy was eventually confiscated by the Nazis and sold in Lucerne. The Swiss buyer, unaware of the substitution, lent the copy to numerous exhibitions ... [between 1955 and 1963] until it was discovered that the original was still in the collection of the heirs of Bruno Cassirer in England."
