Notes
In a letter to Zola written in October 1866 (see supplementary image) Cézanne described a project for a large painting depicting Marion and Valabrègue setting out for the motif. Cézanne wrote again to Zola on November 2 admitting that the picture had not worked out as he had hoped. This oil sketch is all that remains. See also FWN 2216.
