Notes

Given the size of the watercolour Rewald believes that Cezanne made this copy after a small version of Delacroix's Medea belonging to Victor Chocquet (whereabouts unknown).
G. Ballas suggests that Cezanne could have copied after a lithograph of Delacroix's Medea in the Lille museum which was published in 1838 in L'Artiste, "selecting the colors with the help of his recollections of the version belonging to Chocquet". (See Rewald 1983a, no. 145)
