Notes

A sketch of the painting appears in a letter from the artist to Emile Zola dated June 30, 1866. In the letter Cézanne describes a composition that he has been working on: "The picture isn't going too badly.... I'm going to change all the figures in my paintings; I've already given Delphin a different pose – just a touch different – I think it's better that way. I'm also going to alter the two others.  I've added some still life next to the stool, a basket with a blue cloth and some green and black bottles." (Letters, 1984, p. 115)

Delphin was the son of the blacksmith, Calvaire-Levasseur in Bennecourt.
