Notes
Venturi proposed that the work is a scene from Faust after Delacroix. Chappuis noted, however, that the watercolor may correspond to a scene in Chapter I (Le Talisman) from Balzac's novel Le Peau de Chagrin. Rewald, on the other hand, suggested that it "rather looks like a copy of some romantic illustration that has yet to be identified." (Rewald 1983, p. 100).
