Notes

The house behind the tree is the same as the one on the hill depicted in two earlier works [La Tranchée, 1867–68 (48)] and [La Tranchée avec la montagne Sainte-Victoire, c.1870 (54)]. Also related to this landscape is another winter scene [Les Marronniers du Jas de Bouffan en hiver, 1885–86 (216)], whereby Cézanne stood to the right of the pool to focus on the allée of bare chestnut trees.

There is a watercolor of the same subject, [Le Bassin du Jas de Bouffan aux arbres dénudés, 1881–83 (1104)].
