Remarks

This still life was probably executed at the Jas de Bouffan. It is painted into the background of a later work, Le Fumeur accoudé, c.1891 (506). Rewald (1996, p. 117) noted that "Venturi saw here the inlfuence of Manet... though the latter was always more subtle, more conscious of painterly traditions, compared with the uncompromising starkness of Cézanne's approach."
